Toshinden (Import Review)

Remember a game called Battle Arena Toshinden for the Playstation? Well for those who don't know Battle Arena Toshinden is a fighting game and was well received in the gaming world. It spawn a few sequels after the original. Now Toshinden makes it's return to the Nintendo Wii in this new installment. Does it capture the same magic?

Story - Each fighter have their reasons to participate in the tournament, some wants to protect their families, some for justice, others for ambition. The story mode is heavy Japanese so we couldn't make out what was really going on. But the story seems solid enough.

Gameplay - Toshinden consists of 5 modes which goes as follows. Story mode, Vs mode, Survival Mode, Practice mode and create a Combo mode. Story mode you take the role of the main character as he goes through his journey. Vs mode you can take on a friend or CPU, there is no online play. Survival mode you must defeat a gauntlet of enemies by a certain time limit. Practice mode you can home your skills. Combo Maker is a tool where you can create combos from preset moves and purchase them into one combo. These points are usually earned in Story Mode or Survival Mode.

Players control the fighters with the Wii Mote and Nunchuck or the Classic Controller. The Wii Mote and Nunchuck can be a little difficult to execute the combos. The analog is used to move your character. The Z button is used for blocking and dodging attacks. The C button is used for dashing, this drains your attack use. But it's refilled by collecting the giant orbs that appears in the fight. The A and B buttons are used for your light and heavy attacks. The combat takes some getting use too. However even when you master the controls the combos are still hard to pull off. For a more better experience we suggest the Classic Controller. It's more friendly and feels more comfortable fighting. Sadly the characters in here only have a few combos. So trying to master them and to find out it's not worth it is disappointed. However a good thing about this is leveling up your weapons. Depending on who you choose you can even summon dragons, transform your suit of armor or simply unleash the full power of your blade. The summons are nice and armor protection gives you an extra edge in battle. The Combo Maker is a nice idea, but you have to buy the moves and some of them cost a lot. Overall the gameplay and fighting is average at best. Oh yeah there is NO RING OUT like the other games.

Gameplay Videos

Graphics - The graphics are decent enough! I would have like a little more interaction with the environment. There is a level that could have been awesome. You are fighting on a futuristic street, but yet no cars, nor traps, nothing comes to bring a epic fear. It just you and your opponent fighting on the street. The character designs are nice, you get a nice anime feel to their faces and movement. Overall the graphics are good enough, but the stages could have done way better.

Sound - The music is actually really good. The opening theme and the music in stages fit just right. Fighting you will feel like you are in an epic battle. The hard rock and strings are very addictive to listen too. The voice actors do their well for the time have on screen. It does however sound like your standard Japanese voices.

Replay Value - There are some secret characters to unlock. The story mode is difficult but gamers for up for the challenge on hard will enjoy it.

Final Grade C-/7.0 - Toshinden has it's moments. It's a decent fighter, but it lacks depth. The controls are difficult and the combos don't feel epic enough for you to keep playing. Is it worth the import? It depends on how bad you want to collect the Toshinden series. It's not bad, but not good either. Final Grade C-/7.0.

428: Fuusa Sareta Shibuya De( Import Review)

One thing that is rare in gaming is interactive novels or stories. These type of games you usually find on the PC. However the PS3, PSP and Nintendo Wii got a very interactive game called "428: Fuusa Sareta Shibuya De." Is this story worth checking out? Or is it a snore fest?

Story - The story starts with a kidnapping within the Shibuya district. As the case gets more and more complicated, a number of unrelated people ends up being involved. There is a policeman, an ex-gangster, a virus researcher, a hothead veteran writer and a person dressed in a cat doll suit. As the fates of these people interweaves tighter and tighter around each other, more dirty secrets are revealed and eventually everything gets out of hand. To clear up the mess, its up to you to make the right choices.

Gameplay - The game as stated before, is an interactive novel. You really don't do much besides read and make decisions. Based on these decisions you will decide the outcome of the story. Throughout the story you will get tips that's highlighted in blue in the dialogue. This will help you make the right choice. Make the wrong decision and you will end up with a bad ending and will have to start all over. Since this game is heavy on Japanese on dialogue, you will gain a better experience if you are fluent in Japanese. However you can tell, by the picture stills and facial expressions of the actors, what is going on in the story. The game is a nice break from what we're use to playing on the PS3, Wii and PSP. It's a nice interactive novel, that will keep you interested even if you don't understand Japanese.

Gameplay Video

Graphics -The graphics uses real life picture stills, and real life cutscenes. It works great for the mystery and complex plot of the story. Based on the trailer we saw. We thought the whole game was an interactive movie. But the picture still animation works nicely. It shows real emotional depth to the story and helps you confirm your decisions. It's a bold and welcome move to include real actors instead of CGI people. It brings realism to the game.

Sound - The soundtrack sets the mood just right. The strings and piano compositions brings an intensity to certain parts of the story. There is also some cool Jazz tracks for some of the lighthearted characters. This is a soundtrack that adds to the game and moves it along. There is little to none voice acting, so the music plays an important role in the game and does well.

Replay Value - The story is engaging and consists of many scenarios. Each character plays a role and with multiple endings you are going to play it over and over.

Final Grade B+/8.5 - 428: Fuusa Sareta Shibuya De is a bold, brave game. It takes all aspect of gaming and throws it out the window. It's not for everyone, but for those wanting a good story and understand Japanese check it out. Is it worth importing? It would be a nice edition to your collection. Final Grade B+/8.5.

International Superheroes (Philippines)

When we think of Superheroes we usually think of Spiderman, Batman, Superman, X-Men etc. There is no doubt that American Superheroes are probably the most well known around the world. But what Superheroes and characters not from USA and Japan? Well each week starting today, we're going start showing you guys Superheroes from other regions. Today's region will be the Philippines.

When it comes to Filipino comics one man usually comes to mind. His name is Mars Ravelo. Mars Ravelo is like the Stan Lee of the Philippines. He has created many characters and was one of the most popular comic book writers of his time. Let's take a look at some of his creations.

Darna

I know what your thinking. Oh my God that's WONDER WOMAN! Wrong! Her name is Darna or her alter ego Narda. What's her history? When a young girl Narda comes across a falling star, she decides to investigate it. Narda comes across a stone with the name Darna written on it. Like a curious child she swallows the stone, when she finds people are coming. She experiences a sensation of traveling in space. She collapses and is found by her family. When she returns home she tells her family what happen. When she mentions the word Darna she is transformed into the super strong amazonian woman. Her powers include flight, super strength and she can't be harm by man made weapons. Darna can also switch back forth from herself and Narda. But the two have to desire the switch. Darna's arch enemy is a snake woman name Valentia who can control snakes.

Captain Barbell

Captain Barbell is a young boy who is able to transform into a superhero, after he lifts a barbell that was given to him by a mysterious hermit. It has been said that Mars Ravelo was influenced by circus strongmen. His powers include super-strength, super-speed, vision powers, near invulnerable armor and flight.

Lastikman

Honestly when I first saw Lastikman I thought hey that's Mr. Fantastic. Then I read about his origins. Lastikman is actually an alien who became trapped on the planet Earth. He decides that he would fight crime there. He is able to stretch and reshape himself to any form he desires. His costumes is a part of him, he could never take it off. Very similar to Mr. Fantastic, but remember no idea is original.

Flash Bomba

Flash Bomba is a man who lost the use of his legs in an accident. He train the rest of his body to an athletic level. He heard a rumor about a creature named Tikbalang. Tikbalang is a creature that has a head of a horse and a body of a man. Tikbalang would grant powers to whoever defeats him. Flash Bomba challenged and defeated him. Flash Bomba powers include superhuman strength, ability to walk up walls, thunderclaps, enlarged extremities.

Dyesebel

Dyesebel is a mermaid who was born from human parents. From birth she was despise because she was different from people who were superstitious. Her father was killed by the those who feared her, and her mother sends her to ocean where she would have a better chance to survive. She is found by Banak who later adopts her and takes her to live with them. There is more but we want you to look her up.

That is some of the creations of Mars Ravelo. There are many heroes from Philippines such as Maskarado, Merza, Japanese Bat and many more. Research and tells us what you find.

Fist Of The North Star Ken's Rage Review

Fist Of The North Star is one of the most beloved Manga's/Anime around. For years fan have been waiting for a faithful videogame adaptation. Fist Of The North Star games have been a hit or mess. Developers Omega Force take their shot? Is this worth the title of the Fist name?

Story - The story follows the first half of the Manga very closely. You take the role of Kenshiro, the heir to the Hokuto Shinken which is an assassination art. The story is taken place after a nuclear war, leaving the world into a wasteland. The world is divided into gangs and Innocent people. The strong prey on the weak, and it's up to Kenshiro to be the savior of the people.

Gameplay - The game consists of 4 modes Legend Mode, Dream Mode, Challenge Mode and Introduction Mode. In Legend Mode you play the story mode that follows the first half of the Manga. Players will play as Kenshiro and other unlockable characters. In Dream Mode players will play a what if type scenario with various characters. Challenge Mode is unlocked once you finish Kenshiro's Legend Mode. In this mode players will fight in a gauntlet of enemies. Introduction Mode is a mere tutorial on how to play the game. The modes are long and will take you about 30 hours to complete for Legend mode. Their is even an trophy/achievement for playing the game over 30 hours. The gameplay is your typical beat em up. You defeat enemies move onto the next area and do the same thing over again. The A.I. is pretty easy to beat, even when it's greater numbers. The boss fights are repetitive as well. No real strategy is needed to beat them, some you just need to keep punching, dodge and punch again. It seems that Kenshiro is too powerful even for his strongest opponents. Kenshiro comes a variety of arsenal of moves and attacks. This is where the game shines. Even though the game is extremely repetitive, fans of the series won't get tired of using Kenshiro Hokuto Shinken attacks. Kenshiro has a basic attack, strong attack and skills attack which fills up depending on kills or damage Kenshiro takes. The skill attacks will bring fans to a nostalgic feeling. Who doesn't love the sound of ATATATATATATATATA!!! WAH-TAAAAH!!!. Also in this game Kenshiro can earn skill points to upgrade his attacks. The combat is easy to use, but a target system in certain sections would have been nice. Overall this is a beat em up that fans would love, but others would stray away from. This game is not for everyone.

Gameplay Video

Graphics - The graphics really capture the feel of the Manga. It's dark, gritty and oh so sweet in detail. The characters look marvelous and the frame rate is great as well. However there were a lot of graphical hiccups in some of the later levels. Some of the walls were out of place and became see through. The environments get repetitive and you start think that your playing the same level over and over again. A change of scenery does eventually happen, but more use of the environments would have been nice.

Sound - The voice acting is great for the most part. Japanese voice actors excel and the English voice actors prevail. Kenshiro and his victims are a little too chatty. Hearing the same lines repeated over and over becomes annoying. The performances of the voice actors matches the characters very well. The music is boring. It's a rock soundtrack that doesn't feel epic at all. It feel forced an uninspired, it doesn't set the mood of the battles. The music is a missed opportunity.

Replay Value - This game has tons of Replay Value. If you look beyond the repetitive gameplay, you have a lot to do. There is more characters to do their story mode with and the dream mode is a game within it's self. Trust us this game has a lot of trophies/achievements to offer. Die hard fans like myself will be on this game until it's completed 100%.

Final Grade C-/7.0 - Fans will look beyond the repetitive gameplay, others won't. This is great for Fist fans only. Others will get bored after a few levels. The presentation is there, but the gameplay could have more to really give us an experience we have been dying for. But like someone dating a rebound. I really want something better, but for now you'll do. Final Grade C-/7.0.

Samuel L. Jackson In PBS Ghostwriter

Growing up as a kid I used to watch a lot of PBS shows. Shows such as "Where In The World Is Carmen Sandiego?" "Wishbone" and of course "Ghostwriter." Angry Birds Review

Hey guys we have a guest reviewer for our the site. He is a good friend of ours. His name is Flip and here is his review on Angry Birds App. Check it out. - The Cool One (Justin)

Angry Birds

This game-app is one of the most addicting game-app I've ever played.

Once you start playing it, you will be hooked. The game is annoying, fun, simple, and challenging. Clickgamer really did there homework when they gave this game its name, because one thing for sure you will get “Angry.”

Story- The story of this game was pretty simple, it’s just a group of Birds that seeking revenge on the Pigs. The reason the Birds are doing this, was because the Pigs stole the Birds eggs. Through out the game the Pigs are doing everything, to protect themselves from the Birds and finding way to keep stealing those eggs. The reason I said “protect themselves” was because throughout the game the Birds are getting angrier and angrier.

Gameplay- The gameplay of the game is perfect for the touch screen technology. It’s really a user friendly game. The control is simple and easy, no buttons to use, no combos to memorize its just drag and aim. The only strategy you need is to aim right, because if you want the highest score you need to do that. On this game all you do is launch the Birds onto this sling shot and hit and destroy the Pigs. On each level the Pigs will advance by building the better hiding spot, but at the same time the Birds will advance by doing other things and not just being lunch, the Birds can get bigger, split into multiples of birds, drop egg bombs, blow up, get super fast, and do a boomerang move. All this move can be easily done by just taping your screen. This game is totally just fun to play but yet annoying and can get you angry because you get into the game that you just want do it right.

Gameplay Video

Graphics- The Graphic is just perfect I can't ask more. I mean the game is simple so they don’t really need to go all crazy on the graphics, but they did a great job because its easy in the eye and really sharp. Everything runs smooth and I didn't experience any hiccups.

Sounds- The sounds was ok, I say that because the background music was a little boring, I think they could done better, but the birds and the big sound was pretty funny. So I give them a plus on that. But one big thing I like is that you can play your own background song so that makes up for it.

Replay Value - The game is addictive and you are going to be hook once you start. Trust me you are going want to try to be the best in this. It's also nice to brag to your friends on who has the highest score.

Final Grade- I’ll give this a A-/9.0 mushroom apps. It’s a great entertaining game and really addictive. So if you have iPhone, or any other device that can get you this game-app I’ll say get it because it's worth the money.

Dragon Saga Review

Dragon Saga is a free MMORPG by Gravity Interactive. I finally sat down with this very unique MMORPG. How does it hold up? Its worth the 2GB download?

Story - Here is the synopsis of the overall story. Since the close of the Dragon War, dragons and humans lived in peace on separate worlds humans on their homeland, and dragons exiled to the depths of the Aether. It was not to last. Consumed with the desire for revenge, the Dark Dragon Elga led a revolt that brought the death of the Dragon Lord and an invasion of the human world. One thousand years have passed since the Five Heroes of legend defeated Elga in battle, and imprisoned him in the labyrinth prison of the Shadow Cabinet. Now, an unlikely agent threatens to release the Dark Dragon, spreading evil's corruption across the land. And as before, heroes must rise to beat back the darkness. The story is pretty fun. I just wish it was explored more like other RPG's, but it's MMORPG so you let the story unfold.

Gameplay - This MMORPG consists of four job classes. Players will be able to choose from Warrior, Magician, Archer and Thief. You can choose different variations of the classes. Like The Warrior can be a gladiator, Archer a Marksman and etc. This MMORPG is very different than others you might have played. For starters this is a side scrolling MMORPG. You'll probably wondering on how that works. The control scheme is actually very simple to use. The arrow keys is used to direct your character. The character has two attack the X button for your main attack, and the A button for your magic. The battle is not random, the enemies just show up on screen and you run pass them if you wish. The fighting is similar to a side scrolling beat em up. You take on a number of enemies at a time and basically you are button mashing all the time. This can get dull quickly but it manages to keep you exciting with new skills and upgrades. As far as quest goes, players have the options to either do side quest or mission quest which move the story along. The side quest are the standards fetch an item, kill this monster scenario. The dungeons are called Mission Maps. Usually you fight a wave of enemies and fight a boss at the end. The game gets challenging as you upgrade to your classes. Trust me in this game you will have to grind. Some of the bosses take a lot or little to no strategy, sometimes all you need to do to beat a boss is just take running far and hitting him. As far as Multiplayer goes in this game. Players can party up with 4 people and it makes sense since it's a sidescroller. Trust me on the harder level you are going to want someone else. Chatting and invites are very easy to use, thanks to it's simple menu interface. Overall the gameplay is unique and fun. However it can get repetitive, but what game isn't?

Gameplay Video

Graphics - The graphics are pretty good. Dragon Saga goes with a Cartoonish/Anime style feel for their fantasy world. It really works and comes to life with the theme of the story. The look of the enemies are great, especially the wolves. The only disappointing thing is the lack of customization you have with your character. Currently you can only change their hair, facial features and color. Otherwise the game and servers hold up well. The loading is quick, there was a few lagging from time to time. However nothing serious.

Sound - The music is great. Nice and cheerful and fits the world completely. Some songs sound generic, but it keeps your interest in the action. The voice acting for what they have is good, nothing over the top and the characters are believable.

Replay Value - This has tons of replay value, the service is great, loading time quick and gameplay unique for an MMORPG. It's bold and having a friend along will make it much sweeter as you take on this adventure.

Final Grade B+/8.5 If you want something different, fun and challenging give this a download. With only 2gb and being free I say it's quite a deal. Fun story and gameplay, but the lack of customization is disappointing. However there is always time for patches and upgrades. Final Grade is B+/8.5

The Best Of Yoko Shimomura

Justin plays the best from videogame composer Yoko Shimomura. Here's a brief history on here from Square Enix Music Online. Yoko Shimomura was born in Hyogo prefecture, Japan. Her parents enrolled her in piano lessons when she was five years old and quickly took to the instrument. After high school, she enrolled as a piano major in Osaka Music University. Upon graduation, she intended on becoming a piano instructor, but, being a fan of video games, she sent some samples of her work to Capcom, who offered her a position. Reportedly, her family members were dismayed with her decision to accept.

In 1993, Shimomura composed her first soundtrack for Squaresoft, the wacky role-playing pastiche Live A Live. Shimomura later tag-teamed with Noriko Matsueda on the strategy/RPG Front Mission in 1995. In 1996, she composed and arranged Square's last Nintendo-produced game for the Super Famicom game system, Super Mario RPG. In 1998, Shimomura went solo once again for the soundtrack to the RPG Parasite Eve. The following year she composed for Legend of Mana, which began to show a development of her style. She has gone on to achieve wide recognition for her work on the Kingdom Hearts series of games.
