Charlotte Episode 2: Melody of Despair Review

Yu is thrown into a position on the student council and starts his job of teaming up alongside Nao to track down other kids with powers.

Episode 2 continues the story arc in a great way from a character development point of view. Yu has now transferred to the school with kids with special powers. He now has to work with Takajo and Tomori to track down other kids with powers. Episode 2 builds on the chemistry and relationship between Tomori, Takajo and Yu. Yu relationship with Takajo is  fun one as boys will be boys. Takajo is a fun character that really loves helping people, however he still can't get his teleportation powers handle. It's nice to see such a likable character actually be the most dangerous one. When Takajo teleports he tends to hurt people by accident because he can't control. I can see he might be the comedy relief of the show.

However the real shine in this episode is Tomori. Tomori is the main focus on this episode as we learn more of her back-story. In episode 1 I thought Tomori was going to be this straight arrow character. I figure she will be the leader of this group with no real depth to her. However I'm happy to report that I was wrong. After this episode I'm really a fan of Tomori. Her backstory really makes you understand why she is the way she is. I won't spoil it but it's pretty heartbreaking. You see a character that lost something and closes her trust off from the world. I think that her power of being invisible truly makes sense thanks to backstory. Her backstory made Yu really understand who Tomori really is. The episode started off slow with some dead scenes of Yu trying to adjust to his new school. Also the hunt for the other student with powers didn't really pull me in. However the use of Tomori's backstory and Yu's realization about his powers made up for it. Another solid entry in this cool anime.
