Lolita Crisis!

So I've been away, and even Tumblr hasn't been tumbling but so much. However, I'm a loli with a cause as of late, so my absence hasn't been in vain. In fact, I've been on a mission to connect with more lolita's.

My little Loli sis and I are embarking on an adventure to make the DC Lolita scene a bit more visual. This came into play during the Hello Kitty for President campaign and pop-up shop that was hosted here in DC. At some point, a few nights before Halloween, I started receiving texts and tweets asking where my Lolita friends were and such. I had to respond that there are about 4 Lolita's in the area that I knew of (and we're all friends LOL) ad that most others only dressed for conventions and such.

SO! Needless to say, we're not too pleased with having to share news like that. But instead of pouting about it ... we're trying to make things happen! As such, we've decided to do more meet-ups (at least once a moth) and lined up some road trips and Lolita good times (in the making!)

Here are some pics from our last two bouts around the city. Two weekends back to back and somehow, I found time to start my Live Journal to share my looks. I've also started creating the MISS-Adventures of Indian Pussy short manga (of couuuuurse it's Lolita inspired!). So stay tuned! But ... read what's after the pics and let's see if we can make this happen. K!

All of this post was to say LET's KEEP in TOUCH! If you're a Lolita ... or even into Japanese sub-culture fashion (ALL are welcome), please send your info my way! Regardless of location, the more the merrier, right?!

Movies About Otakus That You Should Watch

It's no secret that I love movies. Heck I'm the movie reviewer for Otakus and Geeks. One particular type of movie I love is movies that have otakus in them. Here is a list of movies about otakus or with otaku characters that you should check out.

Densha Otoko (Train Man)

The most famous story of all otakus is Densha Otoko. The story of an otaku who saves a girl on the train from the assault of a drunken passenger. This actually loosely based on a true story. The story proceeds with the otaku asking the girl out and getting dating tips from people on a popular message board. The movie is very light hearted and tells a good story of the nerd finally getting the girl. It shows the importance of confidence, self love and being yourself. This is a must watch movie for otakus everywhere. Good acting, wonderful settings and great music.

How To Date An Otaku Girl

A guy meets girl. She turns out to be a yaoi fanatic, what transpires is a fish out of water story for the guy as he tries to adjust to her lifestyle. This is a sweet romantic comedy but it gets serious towards the middle. The female protagonist deals with whether she will be accepted being otaku. She is viewed as being weird, or awkward which most otakus can relate too at some point. It's not a perfect movie, but when it gets to the serious tone it made it a must check out.

Otakus In Love

This film is about a manga artist down on his luck and happens to meet a girl and it's love at first site. Funny, light hearted and it packs plenty of cosplay for the otakus. It's a fun film to watch and it's a great romantic comedy.

Otaku

Honestly I wasn't a fan of this documentary on otakus. To be fair it was made in 1994 and otaku was kind of a negative term back then. However it still a decent insight on the otaku culture in Japan in the 90's. It might rub some hardcore otakus the wrong way when they touch on the issue of obsessions, but it's worthy of a look.

Skyfall Review

After setbacks after setbacks it would seem that we wouldn't get a James Bond for a long time. Thankfully things were taken of and Bond is back for another mission. This time things are a little more different and more personal. Should you see Skyfall? Or just wait for the sky to literally fall to see it?

Story - Bond's loyalty to M is tested as her past comes back to haunt her. As MI6 comes under attack, 007 must track down and destroy the threat, no matter how personal the cost. That is the synopsis for the film. Dare I say that this is the best James Bond film in a very long time. Don't get me wrong "Casino Royale" is a classic and I'm probably one of the few that enjoyed Quantum Of Solace. However Skyfall is a welcome back to James Bond. All the ingredients of a Bond film is in this one. The Bond girls, the exotic locations, the amazing music and Q is back in this one.

The story is very well put together, it takes all the elements of Bond and sets it into a more realistic world. There is still big set pieces for action fans, but don't expect any lasers trying to destroy Bond's crown jewels. As Q puts it when he gives Bond the gadgets "We're you expecting an exploding pen?" This James Bond story is a little different because it's not really about Bond. This story is actually more about his superior M played by Judi Dench. As stated in the synopsis M past has come back to haunt her and in a major way.  MI6 loses precious computer data that contains a list of undercover agents. In order to retrieve it M sends Bond and another agent Eve to retrieve it. Unfortunately Bond is shot during the mission and appears to fall to his death. I won't go into more details here for the sake of spoilers. What makes Skyfall such a great Bond film and film in general is the characters. The plot is good, but it's the interacting with Bond and the world that grabs you and won't let you go.

Judi Dench's M is unlike you seen in the Craig Bond films. She is more ruthless and cutthroat with her decision making. She is driven to one goal and that's to find who stole the list no matter what, even if it means the lost of a couple of agents. When Bond enters back on the scene he is not the same. I love how this movie humanizes Bond even more than "Casino Royale." Bond has choices to make and each choice has a consequence. Each choice Bond will have to live with and for once it's nice to see James Bond vulnerable. We're use to seeing Bond witty, strong and a total badass. However Skyfall we see Bond struggling with missions, struggling with his relationship with M and struggling with keeping himself together. In addition to M's and Bond's great written personal stories, it won't be a Bond film without the villain and Javier Bardem's "Silva" is one hell of a Bond villain. He's smart, one step ahead of Bond and MI6 and is very ruthless. The ties that he has with M makes the movie more of a thriller when he enters the scene. He's a traditional Bond villain but with a more realistic touch and it works.

Acting - Daniel Craig James Bond is progressing into the James Bond we all know and love. Craig gives another stellar performance as Bond. His cold stare, but emotional facial expression only adds to great job he's done. As a more humanized Bond we see more expressions of regret, doubt and even concern which you will enjoy. Judi Dench as M is her best performance as the character. Getting more back-story and more of a focal point gives Dench more acting range. Her performance is solid and at times a little scary when she is giving orders. When she said "Take the bloody shot." I literally got chills at the look on her face and tone of her voice. It was like a mother telling you to go sit it down. Javier Bardem's as Bond's villain is phenomenal. His performance as Silva is menacing and sophisticated  He appears like a calm guy that you would never think was a killer until he actually starts the killing. It's one of the best performances for a villain this year, maybe the best. Silva steals almost every scene that he is in. I just wish he had a little bit more screen time. Other two performances that I must mention is Ben Whishaw as Q, and Naomie Harris as Eve. Ben Whishaw is wonderful playing a more younger and modern day Q. Another character that I wish had more screen time, his chemistry with Daniel Craig was spot on.  Naomi Harris as Eve is great, she gets enough time for her character be developed and for you to invest in her. A special revealing about her will make Bond fans smile.

Music & Film-Making - The music is amazing! Adele's opening theme "Skyfall" is a great addition to the Bond series. The song does what a lot of movie theme songs don't do. The song talks about the events or inspired by the actual movie. Thomas Newman composition is spot on. The music is more intense and connects more with the audience. The soundtrack stays true to the Bond franchise with the use of horns, strings and piano. Sam Mendes is someone I hope gets signed for the remainder of Craig's Bond films. You can tell from his direction that he cares about this franchise. He made sure to put story first and set pieces second. The style of story telling is very unique from his choice of shots and cinematography. This a beautiful made movie.

Final Thoughts - Skyfall is probably the best James Bond film. It all has all the Bond elements but with a touch of realism and emotion. The movie is intense, edge on your seat. If Casino Royale was like a Batman Begins for Bond, consider this Bond's Dark Knight. This is truly a must see movie.

Animes That Will Work In A Live Action Film Adaptation

With anime growing and growing and gaining more mass appeal to American audiences. Hollywood has taken note and are starting to license some anime's for a big screen adaptation such as Bleach, Akira (was scrapped), Robotech and many more. However Hollywood has not been successful with faithfully adapting anime for live action. Today I wanted to give a list of anime shows and movies that I think will work in live action and appeal to American audiences. I will name the anime, the genre I think it will fit in, how long I think the movie should be, the rating of the film and estimated budget cost.

Lupin The 3rd
Genre: Action/Comedy
Running Time: 1hr & 45 Mins
Rating - PG-13
Estimated Budget - 50 Million Dollars

Lupin The 3rd is a anime I can see working in live action. It has all the elements that can make it a long running movie series. The tale of a master thief and his crew has been done over and over again in Hollywood. However I don't think Hollywood has encounter someone quite like Lupin and his gang. The characters in Lupin The 3rd are off the wall and will be guaranteeing fun as well as laughs. The movie should start with a mini backstory on Lupin and his crew using sources from the original manga and some of the anime movies. Then transition into the big mission and goal of the film. A live action attempt was tried in the 70's but I think it's time to bring Lupin into the big screen.

Grave Of The Fireflies
Genre: Drama
Running Time: 2hr and 20 mins
Rating - PG-13
Estimated Budget - 70 Million Dollars

For the record I know this movie has tons of live action adaptation. However I don't think it did good job as the anime. A "Grave Of The Fireflies" live action with a bigger budget will be great. This is my favorite anime movie of all time, and I would love American audiences to see a story on these two orphans struggling to survive after losing they mother in a time of World War 2. If it has the right direction and the best of the best Asian actors, and a revamped of the anime's original soundtrack, I think this could be an Oscar contender. However it will have to be in the hands of people who care deeply about the message and the characters.

Perfect Blue
Genre: Thriller/Suspense
Running Time: 1hr and 40 mins
Rating - R
Estimated Budget - 35 Million Dollars

Some critics said that if Alfred Hitchcock got into anime he would have made "Perfect Blue." I have to agree with that statement. "Perfect Blue" is a psychological thriller that just happens to be in anime form. The story of Japanese pop idol wanting more for her career decides to become an actress. When she leaves things become very dark as she is stalk by someone who was not happy with her decision. This anime is very mature that is why I the live action will be rated R. The anime is filled with graphic images, rape scenes and nudity, but the overall psychological aspect of the main character is what I want audiences to see on the big screen.

Gunslinger Girl
Genre: Action/Drama
Running Time: 2hr
Rating - R
Estimated Budget - 50 Million Dollars

This will be a very controversial film for American audiences and it's just wishful thinking. I don't think a movie of teenage girls as assassins will fit well with some people. However if Hit-Girl can kill why can't the Gunslinger Girls. The movie is not just about the kills. This anime has heart about girls who were near death and save by a government organization and trained as assassins. The relationship between the girls and the mentors should be the main focal point of the movie. Gunslinger Girl will be an emotional but action pack ride if it's done right.

A Wind Named Amnesia
Genre: Drama
Running Time: 1hr 50 mins
Rating - PG-13
Estimated Budget - 35 Million Dollars

The apocalypse didn't happen by a zombie outbreak, or by a nuclear war but it happen with a simple whisper in the wind. "A Wind Named Amnesia" is a movie I will like to see a live action version of. It has great characters and a nice plot of only one man remembering what it's like to be human while others have forgot.

Mobile Suit Gundam
Genre: Action/Drama
Running Time: 2hr and 20 mins
Rating - PG-13
Estimated Budget - 100 Million

If a Robotech movie is in the works than you can't forget about Mobile Suit Gundam. This is one of the anime's that started the mech crazed in anime. The story is pure classic and with war like the original Mobile Suit Gundam it will be nice to see who American audiences choose the Zeon or Earth Federation. The action will have to be top notch and taken with care that is why the budget is 150 million dollars.

Vampire Hunter D
Genre: Action/Horror
Running Time: 1hr and 50 mins
Rating - R
Estimated Budget - 45 Million

Who doesn't love a tale about vampires and the people that hunt them? This would be one hell of a movie that I could probably see Tim Burton producing. Vampire Hunter D is one of the most beloved anime characters and with the right studio it can easily become a franchise. All I ask is that they use the manga and the two movies as source material.

Elfen Lied
Genre: Horror/Drama
Running Time: 1hr and 50 mins
Rating - R
Estimate Budget - 45 Million

Another anime that might be hard for American audiences. However  Elfen Lied has great commentary on bullying with Lucy's backstory. This will be a great horror movie with drama elements. I can imagine the rampage Lucy will go on in this movie. This film will have a lot of gore, but keep intact the core dramatic story of Lucy. The vectors CGI will be pricey to make it look realistic as possible.

Those are my choices of for anime's that I think will work in a live action film. Let me know your choices in the comment section and what do you think of my choices.
