NYCC 2014 DareDevil on Netflix Panel
/Hey Otakus and Geeks fans, New York Comic Con was amazing this year and bigger than last year. There were many exciting panels this year, but the most anticipated one was DareDevil on Netflix. Now just in-case you are unfamiliar with the Man Without Fear, here is a quick synopsis of the character:
Living in the Hell's Kitchen neighborhood of New York City, Matt Murdock is blinded by a radioactive substance that falls from an oncoming vehicle. While he no longer can see, the radioactive exposure heightens his remaining senses beyond normal human ability. His father, a boxer named Jack Murdock, supports him as he grows up, though Jack is later killed by gangsters after refusing to throw a fight. After donning a yellow and dark red, and later an all dark red costume, Matt seeks out revenge against his father's killers as the superhero Daredevil, fighting against his many enemies including Bullseye and the Kingpin. Daredevil's nickname is "the Man Without Fear".
So now that you know a little bit about the character, here is my review of the Panel.
The Main Stage at New York Comic-Con was packed on Saturday evening for Marvel’s Daredevil, the first of five collaborated television series from Marvel and Netflix. Head of Marvel Television Jeph Loeb came on stage to talk about the cast, five clips we would be viewing, a just a little about the tie-in series on Netflix. He started by asking" How many people here are Dare Devil Fans" as the panel screamed, he got everyone ready for the first clip.
The first clip:
Karen Page enters a dark apartment on a stormy night. She climbs on top of a table. Karen then lifts up a ceiling panel, pulling out a flash drive. As she climbs down, a man sneaks up behind her and smashes her into the wall multiple times, causing Karen to drop the flash drive. He then picks the item up, pulls out a Knife and walks over to her, ready to kill her. Matt Murdock, dressed in all black and a mask, runs into the room and the two men begin to fight in the apartment. They crash through the window, falling multiple stories onto the wet pavement. ( End of the Clip )
Loeb then welcomed the cast: Executive Producer Steven S. DeKnight, Vondie Curtis-Hall (Ben Urich), Ayelet Zurer (Vanessa), Elden Henson (Foggy Nelson), Deborah Ann Woll (Karen Page), and Vincent D’Onofrio (Wilson Fisk/Kingpin). Loeb finished the introductions by mentioning that years ago, Joe Quesada told Loeb that he had found the actor to play Matt Murdock, even though they did not have the rights to create the property and had no plans to make the show. Charlie Cox then took the stage to loud applause.
Before speaking with the cast, Loeb revealed that Rosario Dawson will portray ‘Night Nurse,’ or Claire Temple, and then showed the second scene in which Claire is treating a beaten and bloodied Matt Murdock, unmasked, on her couch. She tells him her name, but he does not offer his.
Loeb then spoke to the cast members and asked about how they felt about playing their character, How they prepared for their role, and what was their inspiration. Some cast member members said they were inspired by reading Frank Miller's run on DareDevil. (This I believe will be the tone and mood of the series ).
When D'Onofrio was asked about playing Wilson Fisk, he described him as "a child and a monster." He said Vanessa will bring Fisk out of the shadows. The actor said the show's also sort of the origin of Wilson and how becomes this iconic character. D'Onofrio and Zurer both said they are playing their scenes as emotional, real, and moment to moment. "I'm digging it," said D'Onofrio.
During the brief Q&A session, Loeb was asked if Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. or Hydra might appear or be referenced somehow on Daredevil and the Netflix series. "It's all connected, man," quipped Loeb, cryptically leaving it at that.
The panel was AWESOME and all Marvel fans will be pleased at what they will see in 2015. Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, and Iron Fist have not been cast or started filming yet. After this showing of DareDevil, I'm sure fans are in for some great new series and I for one can't wait for The Defenders.
