Scream 4 Review
/
Do you like scary movies? What is your favorite scary movie? Scream 4 sees the return of Neve Campbell, David Arquette and Courtney Cox for this 4th installment. The movie is directed by Wes Craven. Is this movie a scream or should this series finally rest in peace?
Story - Sidney Prescott, now the author of a self-help book, returns home to Woodsboro on the last stop of her book tour. There she reconnects with Sheriff Dewey and Gale, who are now married, as well as her cousin Jill and her Aunt Kate. Unfortunately, Sidney's appearance also brings about the return of Ghostface, putting Sidney, Gale, and Dewey, along with Jill, her friends, and the whole town of Woodsboro in danger. That is the story synopsis.
Is Scream 4 better than Scream 3? The answer is yes. Does Scream 4 bring back horror back to it's glory days of fear and suspense? The answer is no. Don't make no mistake Scream 4 is not a bad film. It's fun, entertaining and that would be great if it was in any other genre. However Scream 4 is a horror flick and instead the story actually focusing on the horror. We get a social commentary on the latest trends, and how bad remakes and other horror films are. It seem like every chance they got the characters were bashing remakes, or Saw. I do agree with the social commentary, but I expect to see something like that on a Podcast or Convention. The story is interesting only up to the third act. As you're watching the film, you really will become invested into wanting to know who is the killer and what are the motives. However by the third act it will become clear who the killer is. The killer motive has to be the worst motive out of the last three movies. I won't spoil it, but it's something that only a teen could think of *hint*. The pacing works well, however the kills are the weakest in the series. The fear factor is overshadow by jokes and pop culture references like Facebook and Twitter. The story suffers from the same formula, that the movie itself bashes other films on. Lack of characterization on some of the key figures in the movie. The killer you really don't know nothing about. You just know why they are doing it. Other than those complaints. The story is enjoyable to watch, the main characters are interesting and the phone calls from Ghostface are always a pleasure.
Acting - The acting is enjoyable to watch. Neve Campbell still owns this series. Courtney Cox is great as Gail and her character even jokes "I still got it." The people from the previous films all play the characters as you are used to seeing them. The new additions are okay. Not much to say about their performances. It's played really safe. They play high school kids who are in danger of being killed. Emma Roberts play a really good innocence sweet girl and you feel for her character until the third act. I felt in third act, she came off as just bratty. Otherwise no complaints on the acting.
Music & Filmmaking - The music does not get your heart pumping to intensity. The soundtrack lacks the suspenseful depth that you look in a horror film. It has it's moments but it lacks a punch for the K.O. The film is nicely shot in pure Wes Craven style. However like I said the kills are lame and repetitive. You think Ghostface would have involved his killing methods. The movie does it's job by inversing you into this world.
Final Grade C+/**1/2 Stars - Scream 4 does not bring horror back to it's roots. The movie is far from scary or suspenseful. You can guess who is next to die, by the third act you will know who the killer is. The social commentary on horror is unwanted and the movie should of focus on the horror in the film. The acting is good, but the ending will leave you saying that was the reason for all of this. Average horror film at best.
