Supergirl Season 4 (Blu-Ray) Review
/By Justin D Williams
“Warner Bros. Home Entertainment provided me with a free copy of the Blu-ray. I reviewed this on this website. The opinions I share are my own.” - Justin
Season three saw Supergirl stop Reign and the other Worldkillers’ threat to our planet, and in the process, Kara discovered her mother survived the destruction of Krypton. Reconnecting with her past caused Kara to realize that her true home is here on Earth, where big changes are taking place for her and all of her friends in National City – and also, it appears, for a doppelganger in Russia!
The Luthor’s, clones, alien hate crimes and introducing a new hero. Supergirl Season 4 has a lot of stuff on its plate and for the most part, it succeeds. Season 4 can be digested with three central arcs. The first part will be the continual fear and hatred of aliens on Earth. The second arc is the revelation of another big bad one that Kara has to overcome. Kara must overcome a clone that is just as powerful but lacks the humanity and love she has. Finally, Supergirl introduces some brand new characters especially one with some unique powers Dreamer played very well by actress Nicole Maines. The story works best at heart when the focus is on course on Kara. When we get to see Kara at her most vulnerable. Melissa Benoist has to put in double duty as she plays both Supergirl and the clone Red Daughter. If Melissa Benoist hasn’t put her stamp on her as Supergirl yet this season she definitely will. Benoist brings a compelling and enjoyable performance to each of her roles which kept me engaged in the lackluster villain of the week episodes. That is a problem I wish CW and DC will fix. The filler episodes hurt the show more than add onto it I think the show will benefit a more focus on the main narrative, than introducing the villain of the week.
The plot is way better than season 3 as characters are more fleshed out such as Lena Luthor. She gets a character arc that might seem like a redemption arc until Lex enters the foray. Lex Luthor is the best thing about season 4. Jon Niven Cryer delivers a crowd-pleasing performance as Lex. He’s cunning, evil and cutthroat and it makes you want a whole season of him as the villain. I’m also happy to report the action is a step up from last year. The fight sequences with Luthor, Red Daughter and some the villains of the week were great.
Overall Supergirl Season 4 was a solid entry to the season. There is some hiccups with the villains of the week and some of the actings could be better. However the introduction of Lex Luthor, Dreamer, and Melissa Benoist double duty make it worth a watch. Oh, of course, I can’t forget the crossover is absolutely amazing. Cheers for Crisis on Infinite Earths.
Final Rating - B-
