Batman & Bill Review
/Reviewed By Justin D Williams
Everyone thinks that Bob Kane created Batman, but that’s not the whole truth. One author makes it his crusade to seek justice for Bill Finger, a struggling writer who was the key figure in creating the iconic superhero, from concept to costume to the very character we all know and love. Bruce Wayne may be Batman’s secret identity, but his creator was always a true mystery.
Just like a comic book tale, Batman & Bill has a story of secret identities, heartbreak and triumph. The story of Bill Finger the co-creator of Batman is a bittersweet one. It's a story of legal rights, ownership and a shady partner who made sure he was never recognized. For decades many believe that Bob Kane was the sole creator of Batman. When you watch this documentary you will see how Bob Kane not only prevented the truth but also lied for years. The documentary is well done by showcasing one author's quest to expose the truth. Author Marc Tyler Nobleman goes on a determine quest that turns into years of hardwork to get finger recognized. The documentary is very well done giving us a look into what aspired Nobleman to go into this mission. We get to see the insides of the comic book business and the important of contracts. The documentary doesn’t paint Bob Kane in too much of a negative light. They didn’t make him look like an antagonist, but they just give you hard evidence that he really try to take all the credit. The life of Bill Finger is a bittersweet one and watching the documentary you can’t help but root for Marc to get this man his credit. Bill was just like many of us comic book fans. He was really into the artform, had amazing ideas for story and just wanted to share his imagination with the world.
As a documentary film, it hits on all the notes on the subject. I like to view this film as a visual autobiographical movie. It focuses on Bill Finger childhood, teen years and adulthood. We also gey the true origins of Batman as we find out how the concept came to be. Overall this was a solid documentary that any Batman fan will enjoy.
