Scream Queens Pilot Review

After a 1995 sorority pledge gone wrong, someone is out for vengeance when a college campus is rattled by a series of murders at the twentieth anniversary of the crime.

Part horror, part comedy, part the classic formula of who did it. All these styles, genres mix into one show and it succeeds. Scream Queens is mostly a comedy show with horror elements thrown into it. The story follows a group of women who are members of a popular sorority. However members of this sorority are turning up dead. It has a typical horror premise but damn it's entertaining. Scream Queens succeeds in three areas acting, writing and story structure. Emma Roberts plays Chanel Oberlin, the leader of the sorority who commands a group of girls she calls her minions. The minions played greatly by Ariana Grande, Abigail Breslin and Billie Lourd each girl named after Chanel with a number. Chanel number 2,3 and 5. Chanel number 4 well I won't spoil it. Emma Roberts plays Chanel so well. She really is going to be the character to hate for the fall season of television. Chanel is rich, powerful and not afraid to let you know. She is a definition of arrogance and anything Emma was on screen I hated her. Love the acting Emma did but her character makes my blood boil. Chanel superior complex works for the show because it rivals Jamie Lee Curtis character Dean Cathy Munsch.  Dean Cathy Munsch has a mission on destroying Chanel's sorority. She feels it's not empowering for women, it separates them by class and social status and wants it gone. However she also has some other motives which hasn't been revealed yet. She is an interesting character who also has power and it's great seeing her and Emma play each other off.

Scream Queens brings each character with some funny and distinctive personality. While some of the girls might be cliche in the horror sense it works well. Keke Palmer's Zayday Williams was hilarious with great wit and one liners. Skyler Samuels is the central sorority member that rivals Chanel. Her character Grace is complete opposite of Chanel. Grace is sweet, humble, intelligent and cares about others. Her rivalry with Chanel is something I'm looking forward too for the rest of the season.

As for as the overall plot goes Scream Queens has a nice set up of trying to figure out who the murder is. It's like watching the a television version of clue with a horror spin. Not much is known of the killer or why but you immediately start pointing fingers at the end of this episode. Horror fans the kills are creative especially a lawnmower  use that will make you smile. Overall the first episode was fun, entertaining and funny. This is a show I will sure be watching weekly on FOX.
