Boulangerie? More like BONJOUR♪Sweet Love Pâtisserie! (Anime Review)
/Sayuri Haruno has just been accepted to the elite confectionary school Fleurir, where she will learn to master multiple confections and possibly fall in love? But there's one catch—there are no sexual interactions allowed between students and teachers!
Plot and Characters
What is so odd is that this is the typical reverse harem trope we see in anime, and yet it still works. Perhaps it's luck, perhaps it's from the fact that this anime is based off of a dating sim game, I don't know. But the characters are all somewhat flat in dynamics; there's the typical character who's never met his promised fiancée, the man who feels like he's not good enough, the tough, tsundere character, and of course, the girl that has a boring back story. But what is so odd is how it still works, and is enough to make the plot good, despite it jumping around and the feeling of lost content. Probably the best thing about it though is how short episodes are: about five to five and a half minutes long per episode.
Voice Acting
This probably has to be my favorite part of the anime, and probably why I marathoned the entire series in one day and enjoyed it. The voices of the male teachers Gilbert Hanahusa (Ryohei Kimura), Mitsuki Aoi (Tetsuya Kakihara), and Yoshinosuke Suzumi (Hikaru Midorikawa) all bring wonderful but different personalities to their characters. With Suzumi-sensei, he is more serious while Gilbert-sensei (who is from France) is an absolute goofball. Of course, the other guy, Ryou Koudoki (voiced by Kaito Ishikawa) is on point. Now, I may be biased because I already love his voice no matter what, but he did a good job playing off the tough, cool guy who is interested in no one but warms up to our protagonist.
Animation
The animation of this series is rather smooth and clean, despite it being a rather funny series. There's a lot of shadows mixed with light, and the movement of the characters is drawn very well, especially when the characters do their "special moves" to cook their confections. Emotions are also well drawn and you are able to tell exactly what the character is thinking at the time with the show, and in turn, sympathize with them. Overall, I think this is the best aspect of the show itself.
Music
I think the music might be the only detractor for me when it comes to this anime. It's...overly cheesy for me, and I feel as though that really gets annoying for people. The opening especially is annoying, but when the ending changes half way through, it is a much better song and better sounding than the original ending. But the music in the anime is sometimes cheesy too and probably the only detractor.
Overall Grade on the Doki Doki Scale
From a scale of one to ten dokis, that explain the feelings on the anime total...
