The Posthuman Project Review

Denny Burke is finally about to graduate high school. Senior year has been one bad thing after another: a broken leg, a broken heart, and — worst of all — a broken home. With four of his closest friends, Denny goes on one last rock-climbing trip to prove he’s ready to start his adult life... On their trip the five teens receive a genetic boost beyond anything they’d ever imagined. Denny’s soon faced with the first big decision of his adult life: does he give up these powers and stay a normal teenager, or does he keep them...and graduate from the human race?

The Posthuman Project is a fun filmed directed by Kyle Roberts. It's stars actors Kyle Whalen, Collin Place, Lindsay Sawyer, Alexandra Harris, Josh Bonzie and Rett Terrell. As described in the synopsis below, the film centers are protagonist Denny Burke. Denny is going through a touch time, he broke his leg, his dad is gone, and his relationship with brother is on the rocks. Things aren't really going great for Denny. However Denny is not the only person going through tough times. His friends Gwen, Adam, girlfriend  Lisa and brother Archie are all going through challenges.  Archie is the smartest kid  in school and has to deal with being bullied. Lisa is dealing with her relationship with Denny. Adam is dealing with uncertainty of his future after high school. Gwen is dealing with a broken family life, school and step-dad who is alluding to being abusive to her. Out of all the characters I think Gwen stood out the most for me. Her story is more darker than the others, and the way she is presented audiences will gravitate to her.

The characters back-stories are flushed out very well in the first act. By the time the group gets their powers a new dynamic of discovery begins. The film explores how these characters interact with these new found powers. Questions the film raised is what would do with these powers? How would you react to it? Of course the group answer that question in their own way. That is what makes this film engaging is the heavy focus on the group of friends. Gwen reacts differently to the powers than Archie would etc. This makes each discovery unique and gives the audience relate to one particular character. For the budget the film has it does great with special effects, pacing and direction. It knows it's audience and who it's for. Fans will appreciate nods to the comic book storytelling style with transitions of comic book turn page. The acting is good, the direction and shots has it's own style which I enjoy. The powers usage are impressive for a small budget. Overall the film  is a very fun ride. It succeeds in characters, direction and storytelling.
