Interview With John Cabrera

We sat down to talk with John Cabrera co-writer of the hit webseries from Warner Bros "H+ The Digital Series." Cabrera chats with us about H+ and how it came about.

OtakusandGeeks.com: How did the concept of H+ come up?

John Cabrera: We started back in 2006 that is when the debut was first conceived. The idea came to me while I was driving through a parking lot. Hence one of the big plot points in the series about a group of survivors that have survive in a parking lot, because they didn't have no reception. That experience actually happen to me while I was driving through a underground parking lot. The radio in my car started going out, then the reception in my phone went next. At that point I started to play around with this idea with a world connected with technology. A world deeply embedded with technology that if we are out reception we feel vulnerable, we feel less complete. That eventually evolved into the idea of this technology being inside of us. I took this idea with Cosimo the co-worker and he loved it. We started building a story world in about a year, then we started sharing it with people and brought it to Bryan Singer's company. One thing led to another and we started making a series for the internet.

OtakusandGeeks.com: Webseries is looking to be the next big thing in regards of how we get our entertainment. Why choose the webseries route instead of traditional routes such as television or film?

John Cabrera: When we first started pitching the project we didn't know where it was going to live. We didn't really  have a format yet, all we had was a world. What was really distinctive was how many stories took place in it. We've been building a mythology for this series that had so many characters, that it was almost begging to be told in a non linear fashion. A story that had us jumping around time, place and seeing things in briefs moments instead of long traditional  narrative arcs. When we sat down with the guys at Bryan Singer's company they were like this is amazing, something like this really couldn't be done on television, but it would be perfect for the internet. I look back on those early days of pitching and all those spaces and what we created. I just don' t think it could really had lived on television. I don't think audiences would have that kind of temperament for this kind of storytelling, this very non linear storytelling. I don't think that would work on the television, however on the internet I believe it does work. On the internet you have more ways to explore how the story is told. As you guys saw at the screening, the story can be told in a variety of ways. You can watch them in order, mix the episodes up, or just watch them on your lunch, this is really something the internet can only do. You have control on how you will watch the series.

H+ Episode 1: Driving Under (Subscribe To The Channel)
OtakusandGeeks.com: That's what we really like about the series, it's not told in a traditional narrative format. We can go to episode 20 and go back to episode 1 because each story is different, experiences are different, characters are different. Speaking of characters do you have any favorite characters from the series?

John Cabrera: My co-writer/co-creator Cosimo De Tommaso is Italian so the entire Italian storyline is deeply inspired by the world he grew up in. In fact the town in the Italian storyline begins in, is the actual town he grew up in. That's definitely an important storyline for him. For myself it would be the India storyline is probably the storyline I'am most connected too on a emotional level.

OtakusandGeeks.com: Let's talk about the theme for a second. Watching the series and this is our own interpretation, we notice a lot of social commentary on the usage of technology. How that in the wrong hands technology could bad. Was that a point you were trying to get across?

John Cabrera: Our approach to technology in the series was never to paint technology as good or bad. What we wanted to do above all else is explore our relationship with our tools. How much does this technology describe who we are as human beings? It's funny I'm one of those guys that become space when it comes to my phone. Every once in a while I think I lost my phone. I would pat my pockets down and nothing will be there, in that brief moment I'm just flooded with terror that I lost my phone. I think to myself it's just a phone, but yet I get so scared like I lost a part of my body. I guess the question is how much different is this technology from our own living tissue. If I lost my phone it would be weeks of recovery. I'll have to send countless emails saying I lost my phone, it will be a long process to recovery data that I lost. We live in age where technology is not that different from H+. The only difference is that with H+ that type of technology is in your bodies rather than our pockets. We were just fascinated of what would happen if this technology was taken away. What will be left? Is there something left that is distinctly human without all this technology? That is something we wanted to get across.

OtakusandGeeks.com: Time to answer some questions from our readers. Mary asked: What is a tool on the internet that you can't go without?

John Cabrera: The social network.

OtakusandGeeks.com: John asked: Kenneth is my favorite character on H+. What can we expect from him in the future?

John Cabrera: You're going to get a little more backstory from him. You'll find out why he is so driven to help. You'll learn more about his connections to this technology. We're also going to learn about his relationship to other people who helped developed this technology.

OtakusandGeeks.com: Is there any plans for a Season 2 or spin off for certain characters?

John Cabrera: Yes! We have a very, very large world here. In writing the first season or part, we had to make hard decisions on what stories we would tell first. In doing that we have a lot of stories left to be told, because this is Youtube we have one of the great advantages of our audience. The audience can tell us what part of the H+ world they want us to explore. It's a feedback that you really don't get from television.

OtakusandGeeks.com: Here at OtakusandGeeks.com we game and read comics. I understand you game a little bit. What have you recently played?

John Cabrera: I'm a Playstation guy. The last game I played was "Skyrim." As for comics "Y- The Last Man" is a huge influence for H+.

OtakusandGeeks.com: Finally what is next for H+ without giving things away?

John Cabrera: Expect more places like Africa, Alaska and more locations. There is more but you'll just have to wait and see.

SHORT STORIES ARE TALL TALES IN SKULLKICKERS 18

Anthology issue of Image Comics series features top talent

Jim Zub's SKULLKICKERS is a cult hit, thanks to its hilarious writing, vibrant art, and, well, ample skull-kicking. The Image title has so much monster-bashing and face-smashing that it simply can't be expressed by one creative team. So, with SKULLKICKERS #18, some of independent comics' best and brightest will be pitching in with stories of their own in the latest "Tavern Tales" issue, a collection of short stories.

Included in the mix are John Layman and Rob Guillory (CHEW), Justin Jordan and Tradd Moore (THE STRANGE TALENT OF LUTHER STRODE), Blair Butler (HEART), Charles Soule (27), and J. Torres (Teen Titans Go!, Batman: The Brave and the Bold).

The spotlight is on Aubrey Sitterson and Ivan Anya, however — the creative team won the SKULLKICKERS Tavern Tales contest and will have their short story featured in SKULLKICKERS #18.

"We put out the call to fans of Skullkickers or any creative comic creators at all — submit your Skullkickers short story ideas or submit a two-page sample of artwork based on a sample script we had posted at www.skullkickers.com," explained series creator and writer Zub. "With over 300 entries, it was incredibly difficult narrowing it down to one writer and one artist, but in the end Aubrey Sitterson and Ivan Anya popped to the top of their respective groups and their short story collaboration is going to knock people out!"

Sidle up to the bar, order an ale, and get ready to hear some tall tales! SKULLKICKERS #18 (JUL120516) will be in stores on September 26 and can be pre-ordered now.

Dark Horse Unveils TYRION LANNISTER Statue

DARK HORSE UNVEILS TYRION STATUE
THE LATEST ADDITION TO THE
GAME OF THRONES® COLLECTIBLES LINE!

SEPTEMBER 5, MILWAUKIE, OR—When looking for a key moment to immortalize as the second sculptural piece in Dark Horse’s highly coveted line of Game of Thrones collectibles, Dark Horse turned to none other than writer/producers David Benioff and D. B. Weiss for the most “statueworthy” moment in the then-unaired second season.
The two chose the memorable scene when Tyrion, as portrayed by Peter Dinklage, charges into battle, leading the defense of King’s Landing against an assault by King Stannis Baratheon in the Battle of the Blackwater. They further assisted with special photographic reference taken during filming, expressly for use as sculpture reference for the piece.
“When Dark Horse Deluxe began developing a new line of collectibles based on the HBO® adaptation of Game of Thrones, we were pleased to discover we had the full attention of all involved, from the team at HBO Global Licensing to the principals steering in the production,” said Dark Horse’s VP of Product Development, David Scroggy. “The Tyrion statue is a benefit of that communication, and we know the fans and collectors will recognize the quality that is the result.”
Dark Horse is currently offering the statue to the trade for advance order. The Tyrion statue will be issued in a limited run, with the final edition size undetermined at press time.
This detailed figure measures approximately 10 inches in height and 9.5 inches across its base, which features Tyrion’s cast-aside helmet and other painstakingly re-created details.
Hand painted and numbered, the Game of Thrones Tyrion statue will come packaged in a deluxe full-color box.
Fans of the series can view a “Making of the Tyrion Lannister statue” video on the Dark Horse Blog.
Look for these statues to arrive in stores on February 20, 2013, with a suggested retail price of $199.99.

Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters

         Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunter

The film is a reimagination of the ubiquitous 1812 Grimm fairy tale that was meant to scare German children from wandering from their log cabins. Now, it will be used to scare those broom-riding, baby-baking-bitches from doing anything ever. Starring Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton as the titular sibling duo.

Andy Warhol's Art of Soup

I've been hella sick this weekend. So yesterday, weak eyes and all, I was able to watch people post where they're scouring their hoods for the Art of Soup cans.

What's that you ask and by who? Well, it's Campbell's soup saute to Andy Warhol's 50th year of canned soup art. If you don't know who Andy Warhol is or what he's had to offer the arts community, including the half tone dot matrix art style we all know and love in comics, now is a GREAT time to get your weight up.

Be sure to read more about the project at A Bullseye View: Behind the Scenes at Target and be sure to run out and pick up a few canned goods! (all pun intended)

Here are some first hand peeks at the product.

 Hope you enjoyed!

They Return? New Season Of Powerpuff Girls [RUMOR]

I am not sure what is going on but I know this, it would fit with all the things that has been going on with Cartoon Network lately. From the revival of the classic "Courage The Cowardly Dog" (which are reruns being shown with reruns of the Powerpuff Girls) to turning Saturday Adult Swim into Toonami. I wouldn't find it shocking that the Big C.N. are looking to bring new life into old classics, maybe they are testing out the market right now to see if anyone would watch the reruns on something other then their classic channel Boomerang.

All I can say right now, is that this is a rumor and any die hard fan may have made this sweet looking poster but with all the sudden shots of life given to old school classic programs, I have to think other wise till that day comes. I will say this, would love a new season of Dexter's Laboratory, Johnny Bravo, K.N.D.(Kids Next Door) and Ed, Edd 'n' Eddy. but for now would love just Power Puff Girls... would put my little pony in their place, that's for sure.

The Binding Of Isaac Review

The binding of Isaac is a twisted and unforgiving Action-adventure/dungeon crawler made by Edmund McMillen one  half of team meat, who made the ever so popular Super Meat Boy. The binding of Isaac is on steam for 5$ USD and the wrath of the lambs DLC that doubles the content is 3$ USD. Is this game worth your time or or an easy pass?

Story- In the binding of Isaac you play as Isaac who lives with his mother who has a obsession with  Christian Television. Every thing is simple until the day  Mom hears a voice from up above ant tells her that Isaac is corrupted by sin and that he needs to be saved. Obeying the voice she takes every thing from Isaac including his pants, then after hearing the voice again this time she locks Issac in his room. Then after in the final calling from the Voice he demands she sacrifice Isaac to show her love for him. In a panic Isaac finds a trap door to his basement under his rug and proceeds to jump down in time to escape his mother. Now this is where your journey begins to face Mom.

Gameplay- Is unforgiving for short if you die and that it you start over from the start losing everything a very old school way of gaming this top down has taken. But this is what gives the binding of Isaac its charm the from items that could save you ass to the unlabeled pills that could easily screw you over every thing is a mystery and you will be playing this game over and over and over. Another major part of the game is the Special rooms such as Treasure Rooms, Shops, Secret Rooms and more where one you could find Items, shot machines, enemies or even a mini boss whatever you find could mean the difference between life and death. But don't forget every thing comes at a price weather its a key, coins or something else. Also lets not forget Isaac his only weapon are tears (unless you find a tear changing item) yes Isaac cries and uses them as ammunition against the array of enemies you will encounter and there is no shortage of them. On another that note the controls are great and take some time to get used to at first most people will be confused especially since there quite a few items that change the controls. Keeping that in mind those controls are what will be used to take on the boss rooms witch only get harder and takes experience to beat most of them. There are moments where things seem broken and even unbeatable but after playing for a year and experiencing most of whats to offer this game perfect as gameplay and controls go. But in all to beat this game you will need both skill and luck.

Graphics and Sound- This is the most unpolished part of the game but the majority of bugs in this department are usually caused by your hardware and not the game it self. That said the art is insane everything looks as amazing as gorey yet cartoony game can look every thing fits and the bosses are all very disgusting looking in a good way. The sound fits every action and and rely is amazing.

Final Grade 9.5- In short this game is amazing! And the replay value is higher than any game I have ever played, the game is based around you replaying and learning from your mistakes. This is a game were every thing effects you and will have you playing for awhile I'm still playing! But I highly recommend this game to any one and is one of the best I have played in awhile.

One Two Punch of Lou Ferrigno s Liberator Screening at Stan Lee's Comikaze Expo

ONE-TWO PUNCH OF LOU FERRIGNO’S “LIBERATOR” -SCREENING AT STAN LEE’S COMIKAZE EXPO
PLUS OPENING FOR STAN LEE DOCUMENTARY
“WITH GREAT POWER”

Los Angeles, CA, August 28, 2012---Fans of “The Hulk” are storming the internet for tickets to Stan Lee’s Comikaze Expo (over 30,000 sold so far) as Lou Ferrigno’s new short film LIBERATOR (www.liberatormovie.com), a 20-minute action-packed presentation pilot starring the original Incredible Hulk, is set to screen not once but twice on Comikaze Con weekend (September 15th & 16th.)

On Saturday the 15th, LIBERATOR will open for WITH GREAT POWER, that Stan Lee documentary. The double whammy begins at 7PM at the Downtown Independent Theater. Stan Lee himself will attend, and there will be a panel discussion featuring Lou Ferrigno as well as the director and producers of both movies after the screening.

Then the following day, Sunday the 16th, LIBERATOR will screen at Stan Lee’s Comikaze Expo, to close the show at 5 PM. Lou Ferrigno and other cast will also attend the panel discussion immediately following.

In addition to Ferrigno, LIBERATOR features an all-star genre cast including: the stunning Peta Wilson (“La Femme Nikita”) as CIA spook Marla Criswell, Michael Dorn (“Star Trek: The Next Generation”) as General Augustus Pollard, martial arts star Don “The Dragon” Wilson as Sidewinder, Tara Cardinal as Gaia, and the legendary Edward Asner (“Up”) as President Whitlock.

LIBERATOR stars Lou Ferrigno as a disgraced, washed-up ex-superhero whose secret black ops past comes back to haunt him as he tries to put his life back together. Like the LIBERATOR character, the heat is also on Ferrigno, as he was recently on NBC’s “The Apprentice,” voiced “The Hulk” in this summer’s box office smash “The Avengers,” and continues to pack them in at fan conventions around the world.

“(My character) was a hero once, an unstoppable machine,” says Ferrigno. “But then something happened, and now the whole world is against him. He lost his relationship with his daughter, his wife – he’s lost everything.  So he decides he’s going to bring out the truth and write a book. There are certain people who do not want this information coming out, so now he has a target on his back. And he decides it’s time to fight back.  It’s a story about a real hero, about finding justice.”

“I like to think of my character, General Pollard, as a cross between Oliver North and Colin Powell,” says Michael Dorn. “He’s a guy to is true blue but who will do bad things if he’s ordered to do bad things, which is a great dichotomy of soldiers we have known. You just do what you’re told, and it doesn’t matter who you’re doing it to. He’s bought into that.”

Says Director Aaron Pope: "Launching a new superhero franchise without a comic label behind us and without money is a nearly impossible task, but from the amazing cast to the dedicated crew, no one blinked, no one wavered.  They put everything they had out there, especially our incredible cast. We’re psyched at the tremendous reaction the film is receiving so far and are thrilled to bring it to the people on Comikaze weekend.”

Jim Cirile is the film’s co-writer and Executive Producer. Aaron Pope is co-writer and Director. Former Marvel Comics Art Director Darren Auck created the film’s comic art prologue and graphic novel artist Gerry Kissell ("Code Word: Geronimo") illustrated the film's closing sequence. SyFy Channel’s “Hollywood Treasure” co-host Jesse D’Angelo designed the Liberator suit. The film features an original orchestral score by Tim Wynn, perhaps best known for scoring the hit video game “Red Faction: Guerrilla.”

RoboCop Remake Loses House, Gets Batman

The upcoming remake of RoboCop has gained the services of Michael Keaton for the role of the film's main villain. This comes after House star, Hugh Laurie recently dropped out.
The character, named Raymond Sellars, is the CEO of OmniCorp, the corporation that builds RoboCop, which use their technological monstrosities like the ED-209 to control the population of the future with brute, mechanical power.

He will apparently be a similar character to Ronny Cox's Dick Jones, who in the original film, was an overly-ambitious second-in-command that used the corporation's resources to run a crime syndicate.
For Keaton, who's donned the dark mantle of Batman in Tim Burton's groundbreaking 1989 rendition, as well as its sequel, this could find him delving into a dark place as the megalomaniac who will do battle with an off-the-reservation mechanical cop in what director, Jose Padilha calls, an "innovative new vision of RoboCop."

RoboCop breaks through theater walls on August 9, 2013.

Lenni Reviews: "In These Words" Vol 1

In These Words by TogaQ and Kichiku Neko
**This title contains graphic adult content.**
I’ll be honest with you, my friends, I bought this manga for two reasons: The cover art and the yaoi. I love me some yaoi. And it’s one of the few genres of manga too explicit for libraries to keep (at least it’s why I don’t buy them where I work). I’ve been duped by fancy cover art and a smartly worded book jacket before but this time, I was pleasantly surprised! What I found was fantastic art throughout and a psychological thriller that’s hooked me for the next installment.
As the description says, Asano Katsuya is a psychiatrist recruited by the police to pull a confession out of a serial killer, Shinohara Keiji. The very moment Katsuya gets the case, he begins to have vivid and disturbing nightmares about being held prisoner by a man who abuses him for every filthy, twisted whim; all the while confessing his love. The connection between these dreams and the very real crimes Keiji gleefully describes is not told to us in this volume. Are they memories? Are they fantasies? Unfortunately we have to wait to find out.
Content note: When I say “vivid and disturbing nightmares” I am not freaking kidding here. This book is rated 18+ for a damn good reason. A man is held prisoner, sliced up, and taken with dubious consent or a flagrant lack of it. There is wang in this book. You are warned so don’t come crying “Omg, Lenni! I saw a naked man!” I’m telling you now, you will see wang and you will see butt sex. Don’t like? Don’t read.
That said, “In These Words” is not a fluffy story of two men who meet, fall in love, are hesitant to tell one another, but get together in a burst of song, sakura petals, and sweet man-love. It’s Law and Order with really hot men. You are treated to Keiji’s demented mind games and Katsuya’s conflict between wanting this confession and trying not to fall into Keiji’s mental trap. There’s the same feeling of wondering if the dreams are memories and if what we are reading is a flashback or happening right then I experienced when watching Perfect Blue. Reality starts to warp, words are bent and twisted, and you fear for Katsuya; who is way too drawn to Keiji right from the beginning.
My only disappointment is I got into this series right when the volume came out and I have to wait for the second one. The art is beautiful. I am a complete sucker for the sketchy quality, where you can see every pen and brush stroke as it forms the image. If you like a lot of story with your yaoi, you could do a lot worse than In These Words. All I can really say is hurry with volume 2!

P.A.M Review

P.A.M which stands for Post Apocalyptic Mayhem is a action racer with out the race, (lol) it is a cross between Full Auto and Twisted Metal. This destruction derby indie is made by Steel Monkeys and is 9.99$ USD on Steam. Is P.A.M a worthy buy or a an easy pass?

Story- There is none! But does a destructive car based action shooter really need one?

Gameplay-  P.A.M is hectic! The way it should be, nothing short of its name your set in a post apocalyptic environment in what ever crazy car you choose, amongst mayhem and your causing most of it. There are three game modes and all are pretty much the same thing. You are not really racing as you are keeping up with the crowd collecting power ups and racking up kills, it is basically Mario cart with out the race. Even though are some bugs and moments in the game you will die and you be left saying WTF but it dose not really effect the gameplay. Your end goal is to collect the highest kill streak by time the race is over, or you could set it to first to a certain amount wins. Either way its a blast!

Multilayer- Multilayer is recommended playing with all your friends is is a great way to experience P.A.M in its true form and best of all really fun. Although  public severs are pretty laggy and unless one of your friends has a good computer with great internet its pointless. But if so it is really fun and can easily play for hours.

Graphics and Sound- The graphics are surprisingly good. I mean didn't think they would be horrible but there better than whats expected of this type of game. The developers could have easily made it cartoon like with no problem but instead they made it realistic, which is not expected of any indie developer. On the other hand the sound is nothing special the sound effects fit and the music is easily muted and replaced by your own.

Final Grade 7.5- At the low price of 9.99$ USD this P.A.M is a great buy and is really fun. With a diverse group of selectable cars and good amount of levels you can play for a while. But a lack of game types that seem like an easy addition and a few mechanics like laps that make no sense for the one game type keep Post Apocalyptic Mayhem from reviving a higher grade. But none the less it is an interesting and fun Game.
